Real-Time Human Pose Estimation and Gesture Recognition from Depth Images Using Superpixels and SVM Classifier

چکیده
In this paper, we present human pose estimation and gesture recognition algorithms that use only depth information. The proposed methods are designed to be operated with only a CPU (central processing unit), so that the algorithm can be operated on a low-cost platform, such as an embedded board. The human pose estimation method is based on an SVM (support vector machine) and superpixels without prior knowledge of a human body model. In the gesture recognition method, gestures are recognized from the pose information of a human body. To recognize gestures regardless of motion speed, the proposed method utilizes the keyframe extraction method. Gesture recognition is performed by comparing input keyframes with keyframes in registered gestures. The gesture yielding the smallest comparison error is chosen as a recognized gesture. To prevent recognition of gestures when a person performs a gesture that is not registered, we derive the maximum allowable comparison errors by comparing each registered gesture with the other gestures. We evaluated our method using a dataset that we generated. The experiment results show that our method performs fairly well and is applicable in real environments.

Pose estimation is a process to identify how a human body and/or individual limbs are configured in a given scene. Hand pose estimation is an important research topic which has a variety of applications in human-computer interaction (HCI) scenarios, such as gesture recognition, animation synthesis and robot control. However, capturing the hand motion is quite a challenging task due to its high ...

The recent popularization of real time depth sensors has diversified the potential applications of online gesture recognition to end-user natural user interface (NUI). This requires significant robustness of the gesture recognition to cope with the noisy data from the popular depth sensor, while the quality of the final NUI heavily depends on the recognition execution speed. This work introduce...
متن کاملCombining multiple depth-based descriptors for hand gesture recognition
Depth data acquired by current low-cost real-time depth cameras provide a more informative description of the hand pose that can be exploited for gesture recognition purposes. Following this rationale, this paper introduces a novel hand gesture recognition scheme based on depth information. The hand is firstly extracted from the acquired data and divided into palm and finger regions. Then four ...
متن کاملReal-Time Hand Gesture Recognition Based on Sparse Positional Data
Low cost devices which provide depth data as well as images (RGB-D), such as the Kinect, have become extremely popular of late. A compact and accurate device launched recently draws attention: the Leap Motion. But despite its high acquisition rate and precision, the data it provides is extremely sparse. In this paper we present a methodology for gesture recognition capable of dealing with the s...
متن کاملA Survey on Human Motion Analysis from Depth Data
Human pose estimation has been actively studied for decades. While traditional approaches rely on 2d data like images or videos, the development of Time-of-Flight cameras and other depth sensors created new opportunities to advance the field. We give an overview of recent approaches that perform human motion analysis which includes depthbased and skeleton-based activity recognition, head pose e...
